Garage Door Openers: Parts, Equipment, and Functionality!

June 8, 2018 //  by Tom Collins

Garage doors can be setup in many different ways depending on how your garage is attached to your main household or whether the garage happens to be a separate building. Regardless of how the property layout is established, having the right garage door equipment, openers, and sensors can be important to living an efficient life around your property.

Transmitters and Remotes

Today’s best garage door openers have evolved from handles and mechanisms to electric connectors and transmitters that can be triggered via an electric garage door remote. There are many different garage door remote manufacturers, but most of the newer and efficient remotes are used in the same way. In most cases, the garage door remote is equipped with some sort of transmitter [1]. This transmitter can send a signal to the opener device, which has a signal detector installed. When a transmission or signal is detected, a motor is triggered and the garage door can begin to open or close.

Opening Mechanisms

There are a couple of different styles of garage door opening mechanisms. The most popular is the chain drive garage door opener. In most cases, a chain is attached to the door itself as well as a motor so that the garage door can transition from its standard “closed” position to its fully “open” position.

There are also belt drive and direct drive mechanisms that could be used as a garage door opener. The belt drive works very similar to a chain drive, the only difference is that the chain is replaced with a rubber belt material. As far as a direct drive mechanism functions, usually a motor can be installed within the trolley and a gear wheel can guide the mechanism between “open” and “closed” positions.

Equipment

There are many competitive brands within the garage door industry. Considering that anyone with a property likely has a garage, this industry could be considered a multi-billion dollar industry. It is important to select the best brands for your garage door so that you can avoid some common issues. It is not uncommon for some garage door mechanisms to cause a jam in the system from time to time. Imagine having to get to work in the morning and you are running late, and then suddenly the garage door gets jammed with your car trapped inside, obviously not an ideal situation… This is why these decisions are important. There is a large selection of garage door mechanisms on Amazon. It is important to select a mechanism with positive reviews, and obviously in a price-range that you can afford.

Price Ranges

These complex garage door mechanisms can vary in price range significantly, some as low as one-hundred dollars, while some of the more advanced and technological mechanisms cost up to five-hundred dollars or more. Reliability is an important aspect when making this type of decision, so it is important to do research within the garage door industry and study customer reviews in order to ensure that you are purchasing the right mechanism for your garage door.
