How Fast Do Electric Skateboards Go?

May 10, 2018 //  by Tom Collins

Skateboarding is one of the most popular action based sports that offers riders the opportunity to participate in an exhilarating experience on wheels. Skateboards have evolved for over six decades and have taken a technological turn, adding an electric aspect, allowing for a faster experience and better efficiency.

Traditional vs. Electric Skateboards

The main difference between an electric skateboard and a traditional skateboard is the fact that electric skateboards offers battery power to generate higher speeds while riding. The fastest electric skateboards can be safely operated up to speeds of twenty five miles per hour or more. This is incredible considering that a traditional skateboard averages out at approximately ten miles per hour, and requires physical leg strength to generate speed rather than battery power.

While traditional skateboards offer no restriction in distance, electric skateboards restrict based on electric battery power. Some of the best electric skateboards offer up to twenty miles of effortless riding before requiring a battery recharge. It is expected that owners of traditional skateboards will start evolving to electric versions very quickly as they become more efficient and cheaper.

Traditional Skateboard Facts

  • Requires Physical Strength
  • No Distance Restriction
  • No Battery / No Charging
  • Averages 10 MPH

Electric Skateboard Facts

  • Battery Charge Powered
  • ~20 Mile Restriction
  • Requires Battery Charging
  • Averages 20-25 MPH

The Future of Skateboarding

It seems incredibly more likely that electric battery powered skateboards will become a major part of the recreational activity as technology continues to advance into the future. With millions of skateboarders always looking for new gear and new styles of skateboards, it seems incredibly possible that one day skateboarding will feature a majority of riders owning an electric skateboard.

Price Comparison

One major detail when deciding between different skateboards is the general price range. An average quality traditional skateboard averages around fifty dollars or slightly more, while an electric skateboard will certainly cost more, approximately five hundred dollars for a popular brand style. This price difference can prevent casual riders from venturing into the electric market due to the expensive start-up cost to begin riding with an electric motor. As prices balance out over time, it is likely that more casual riders will consider purchasing an electric board, and more will show up on the streets of our neighborhoods and in popular skate parks. Additional Information

Popular skateboarding brands are beginning to explore the electric world of skateboarding, offering new styles and ideas to the sport. Some consumers have voiced their concerns regarding potential safety hazards in electric skateboards, offering the possibility that the speeds are way to fast without additional gear and protection. Some companies are beginning to explore new safety enhancements to better compliment the skateboarding industry, and more specifically, electric skateboards.
